How to select your area of specialization for MBA?

MBA can turn out to be a pivotal moment in shaping one’s career if done thoughtfully and sincerely. Remember ‘thoughtfully’ is not just any random word put here in order to justify the semantics of the sentence, it really does matter a lot.

Don’t let the crowd fool you!!

It’s better that you decide what’s best for you and not others. Read further and do what’s best:

1. Self-analyze to know your strengths:

Any good thing comes from within and therefore self-analyzation before going for an MBA plays a very crucial role in defining one’s career after completion of the course. Not everything can be taught and choosing an area of specialization for your MBA is one such scenario. You should even before the thought of an MBA comes to your mind should know about your key strengths. Once you know your strengths, it will get easier for you to decide the specialization that would best suit you.

2. How your working experience will add value to the  specialization?
This is one question that every working and experienced professional should consider very seriously. If you are a fresher than you can choose your specialization based only on your personal preferences but when you are employed, you’ll need to consider other factors to like what specialization will go hand-in hand with your current profile and how an MBA degree will further shape your dream career.

3. Market Demand: Yes one should consider market demand too when planning an MBA. Aling your interests with the trend and then decide what’s best for you. At times you need to go with the tide in order to ensure you don’t end up sinking. However, it’s even better if you don’t follow idiocracy and do an MBA just for the sake of flaunting a piece of paper. Just owning any degree because it sounds cool won’t help you in the long run.

So first evaluate the market trend, then align them with your interests and then go for an MBA.

4. Career choices available in sync. with your passion: This is a follow-up to the above point which will make it more clear how personal interests and passion contribute a lot in deciding your MBA specialization. One thing I personally feel is that most people have to work for at least 30 years in their career and one can’t do that continuously if they don’t have a passion or interest for the same. Yes big bank balance matters but at some point, your work will become a burden and you will be a 40-year old with money but no effervescence.

Therefore, choose wisely now because 5 years from now, there won’t be any turning back.

5. Personality Type: MBA and Personality? Seriously is there even any relation?

Well, if you never thought of this before maybe you aren’t well-prepared for an MBA. Yes an individual's personality is a very significant factor when it comes to choosing your specialization. Yes the group discussions, personal interviews, case studies does train you in developing a versatile personality but the basic character of an individual remains the same.

So one should always give listing out his personality traits proper thought before he/she goes jumping into managerial studies. Yes it does matter if you are an introvert or an extrovert because as a manager you’ll be responsible for a number of things and your personality can affect your work. And similarly your overall personality matters too.

6. Choose a B-school only from the few best MBA colleges in India:

You guessed it right!!

College matters a lot and especially when you are an MBA aspirant. For most people MBA might be the last degree they add on to their name and everyone wishes to get it from the best MBA college in India.

Don’t compromise on your college and never on your specialization too!!

Conclusion:
There are no rules stating that only an MBA can guarantee you a better career. Yes it can get you the dream job you want but not if you have researched well and jump into the war unprepared.
Ask yourself why, how and when!! Once you have the answers you are ready for the battle.
